Timing chain kit range promotes full system replacement

CONSTANT WEAR Timing system components operate under constant mechanical stress, high temperatures and continuous loads, making them susceptible to wear
Ageing vehicle fleets, rising maintenance costs and rising pressure on workshop efficiency are increasing the need for complete automotive repair solutions, says automotive aftermarket parts supplier Universal Parts Group (UPG).
The company supplies its Shimizu Timing Components (STC) aftermarket range, which includes timing chain kits, oil pumps, timing belt tensioners and idlers, wheel bearing kits, and micro V-belt tensioners and idlers.
UPG CEO John Black says the timing chain kits are an important part of the range because the timing system synchronises crankshaft and camshaft operation in internal combustion engines.
He explains that timing system components operate under constant mechanical stress, high temperatures and continuous loads, making them susceptible to wear. Failures are often not isolated and can result in extensive engine damage if not addressed comprehensively.
Black says the STC timing chain kits are designed to support complete timing system replacement rather than replacing individual components. “By combining essential parts into application-specific kits, the approach reduces the risk of mismatched wear and incomplete repairs while restoring the timing system to its intended operating condition,” he says.
The range includes complete timing kits containing chains, tensioners, guide rails, dampers, sprockets, gaskets and seals for full system overhauls. “For applications where sprockets remain within acceptable wear limits, kits are also available containing chains, tensioners, guides and associated components. Selected applications include master link-type chains to simplify installation and reduce labour time,” he explains.
According to UPG, timing systems typically require maintenance between 120 000 km and 150 000 km, although operating conditions can accelerate wear. Warning signs include rattling noises, irregular idling and difficulty starting.
“Complementary sprocket sets are also available to help distributors optimise stockholding while maintaining broad vehicle coverage,” Black notes.
UPG also supplies automotive brands including Gates, Europart, Timken, NTN, MRK, NSK, Tirsan, Gomet, Pivotal, Walterscheid, APG and Spicer.
“The products are available through automotive spares dealers and are supported by UPG distribution centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Gqeberha and Durban, which operate integrated inventory and dispatch systems to maintain stock availability and consistent lead times,” he concludes.
